Oakland — A man believed to be a construction worker who had just gotten off work was shot to death Friday evening.

Police were trying to identify the victim Friday night.

The shooting happened about 5:12 p.m. at the intersection of 38th and Clarke streets in West Oakland.

Police believe the man was working at a nearby construction site and was walking to his vehicle after getting off work. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Sgt. Tony Jones said police still are trying to determine a motive for the killing.

The killing was Oakland's third homicide of the year. Last year at this time there had been eight homicides.
